Fleurtations and Environmental Factors

Here at Fleurtations we are very aware of the need to consider the environment in the day to day running of our business.

The flower industry has many issues to address regarding its impact on the environment. The decline in the British growers means British sold flowers are largley imported from abroad accruing air miles. The flower industry also relies largely on packaging in order to protect the flowers at every stage of the shipping process from grower to wholesaler, wholesaler to retailer and retailer to customer.

Grower to Wholesaler
Our main wholesaler in Holland sources directly from the grower cutting out other middle man wholesalers. In most cases he supplies the grower with the boxes that are used to transport the flowers to us. This not only cuts out  transportation from the grower to various wholesalers but also cuts out the repackaging of the flowers as they arrive to each wholesaler.

Wholesaler to Retailer
We are forced to buy a large proportion of our flowers from abroad due to the unfortunately decline in British flower growers. It is possible to source flowers from all over the world, we opt largely to buy our flowers and plants from Holland due not only to the fantastic quality, variety and availability but also sourcing from Holland allows us to buy from abroad with the lowest possible carbon foot print and zero air miles.

We receive a large proportion of our flowers packaged in long cardboard boxes which does create large amounts of waist. We ensure all this cardboard is recycled every week. We also opt where possible to receive some of our delivery in upright flower crates which are returned to the wholesaler and can be reused time and time again.

Retailer to Customer
For us to ensure you receive your flowers in the best available condition we do need to use packaging. Our cut flowers and plants are wrapped in biodegradable paper. Our gift range including traditional Bouquets, Hand Ties and Auqa's are packaged using cellophane due to its durability. Due to the mechanics of the aqua it is essential we use a durable waterproof material, we are currently looking into offering an optional biodegradable waterproof cellophane for our aqua's. We already offer an biodegradable paper option on our other gift products at the customers request.

Organic Flowers and Sourcing Locally
At present the organic flower market is not well developed and buying certified organic flowers does not always guarantee variety, quality, available and a competitive price, all things that we like to be able to offer our customers. Buying organic in the flower industry is not necessary as environmental friendly as you first think. The main source of buying organic flowers is from areas of the world such as South America. Although these flowers may be organic, the air miles that they accrue in arriving to your door is massive. Therefore at present we do not buy organic flowers, unless available locally. If these issues within the organic flower industry were improved, we would certainly consider offering an organic option to our customers.

We see sourcing locally where possible as an important factor in our buying process ensuring we keep the air miles on our products as low as we can. In their season we source locally grown sweet peas, sunflowers, sweet william, daffodils and phlox, along with British grown chrysanthumums, eustoma, delphinium, aziatic lily, large pink and white lily, narcissi, larkspur, glady and tulips. When available, in season, our calla lily's are grown at our family market garden in Norfork.
